Twelve volunteers planted dozens of perennials Saturday, April 18, at the City Market.

Joining 16 new ‘Green Velvet’ boxwoods (Buxus) in the raised bed along Market Street are: coral bells Heuchera villosa* (‘Caramel’ and ‘Autumn Bride’); Heuchera* ‘Amethyst Mist;’ Hosta (‘Sagae’ and ‘Blue Cadet’); Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa), Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginia); lady fern ‘Lady in Red’ (Athyrium felix-femina*) and crested irises (Iris cristata*). We added hardy geraniums (Geranium macrorrhizum) ‘Biokovo’ in one of the beds in the grassy lawn and several more prairie dropseed (Sporobolis heterolepsis*) to finish out the bed by the Whistler Monument.

* = Eastern U.S. native plants or cultivars of native plants.

Thanks to: Ken Hottell, Georgia Hottell, Cindy Carter, Pat Severns, Linda Williams, Karen Kennedy, Kathleen Hull, Carol Harrison, Natasha Garcia, Lou Ann Baker and Wendy Ford. Ken, Georgia, Linda, Pat, Karen, Kathleen and Lou Ann are Marion County Master Gardeners. Wendy, of course, did the design. Thanks, also, to Carol Mullins from Indianapolis Downtown Inc., for helping us coordinate this effort.

We’re planning another planting in May — date to be determined — when we will pull out the pansies from the 25, four-foot containers and replant with herbs and ornamental peppers. On that day, we also will plant a few more perennials in the Market Street raised bed and add Knock Out Red roses (Rosa) in another raised bed.

Once we have the date set, we will contact all the volunteers who’ve already worked at the City Market, but we will need more. Please let me know if you are available: joellen@hoosiergardener.com
