Orchard In Bloom: 21 and growing

Recognized by The American Horticultural Society as one of the top garden shows in the country, Indianapolis’ Orchard In Bloom [1] is a distinctive garden and art show featuring gardening and landscape ideas and products, national exhibitors with a broad range of art and merchandise, live music, speakers and children’s activities.

The shrub Diervilla 'Cool Splash' is one of the new plants to be discussed by Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp at Orchard in Bloom, April 29, 2010.

The Hoosier Gardener, Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp, [2] will speak about new plants for the Indiana garden at 11 a.m., Friday, April 30. She was the honorary chair of Orchard in Bloom in 2008. She also will be a landscape judge again this year.

The event draws more than 9,000 visitors each year to Holliday Park, one of Indianapolis’ oldest and largest parks, 6363 Spring Mill Road. Proceeds support outdoor education programs at Holliday Park and The Orchard School.

Visit the Garden Pavillion tents to see examples of innovative gardens created by landscape designers. Scattered throughout the show are Microgardens, specialized gardens ideally suited to small spaces. Shop the Gardener’s Market where regional and national exhibitors sell handcrafted tools, elegant garden furniture, herbs, blooming plants and flowers, art and accessories for home and garden. Treat yourself to a purchase of one-of-a-kind jewelry and take advantage of the endless gift ideas. Come talk to experts from local gardening organizations and not-for-profit groups.

Children’s activities include entertainment such as a magic show and face painting and hands-on projects such as using a potter’s wheel or creating ceramics. Satisfy your hunger at the Aladdin Garden Café with a variety of taste temptations. Enjoy live music or take home tips from our expert speakers.

Tickets are available at event and at all central Indiana Marsh Supermarkets, all National Bank of Indianapolis branches, Indianapolis Museum of Art Greenhouse, The Orchard School and Holliday Park. Preview Party: Before the Bloom, 6 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, April 29, available at The Orchard School for $45.
