Knightstown, Ind. — Several visitors stopped by Colbalt Blue Press Bookstore to chat about gardening, including rain swails and bay leaves. I was there Saturday to sign copies of the Indiana Gardener’s Guide.
Shannon Cagle, best known as the Weekend Gardener at WISH-TV, Channel 8, before she left for the world of freelance production and bookstore ownership, has a warm and joyful place at the corner of U.S. 40 and Jefferson Street in Knightstown.
She knew her shoppers by name, asked about their health and helped them find the books they were looking for in the used book store.
The store has a hefty collection of post cards, sheet music and other fare for those who like to flip through well-organized cardboard boxes looking for prized materials. She had no Nancy Drew mysteries, though, the stuff of my childhood. A local buyer scarfs up whatever she finds.
The store is open every day except Thursdays, the day Shannon teaches at Butler University, her alma mater. Shannon, who is married to Channel 8 reporter Rick Dawson, also had a hand in the wonderful production in WFYI’s series, the Natural Heritage of Indiana.
My thanks to Shannon, her son and daughter, and visitors for a lovely morning in this Henry County community that sits on the National Road.
