With the Indiana Flower & Patio Show about to start March 14, it might be good to read what the New York Times has to say about the demise of similar shows throughout the country, including the New England Flower Show in Boston and the likely closure of the Northwest Flower Show in Seattle.
The lovely and always spectacular Cleveland Flower Show, scheduled for 2009, has been postponed by the Cleveland Botanical Garden until 2010.
The Times says young adults are not particularly interested in gardening and their parents have slowed down in that area. And growers say it’s getting more expensive to keep greenhouses warm enough to force the lilacs and daffodils for the shows. And forcing plants takes space away from growing plants for the upcoming season.
