The Hoosier Gardener talked about planting tips and care of hanging baskets on Fox 59, May 19. Here’s a summary:
- Use a lightweight potting mix not potting soil, top soil or soil from the garden.
- Use plants that have the same light and water requirements.
- Plant the hanging basket for sun, shade or part sun/part shade.
- Use just one plant or use a combination of plants, which ever you prefer.
- Baskets can be all the same color or be a combination or colors and textures.
- Mounding plants should be in the center of the basket and trailing plants along the outside edge.
- Select plants with a long bloom period.
- Hanging baskets usually have to be watered every day or two, depending on the plants, type of basket (plastic, moss lined, etc.) and where the basket is hung. Feel the soil and if it’s dry, water the basket.
- Fertilize hanging baskets every week to 10 days for the best show of flowers.
